Parent and Student Beginning of the Year Welcome Letter
Dear Students and Parents,
Please allow me to take a moment to welcome you to LakeshoreMiddle School for an exciting and eventful seventh grade year. My name is Amy Czech and I will be your child’s Language Arts teacher. (Many of you remember me from prevoius years as I previously taught both 6th and 7th grade Language Arts with this current class of students.) I received my undergraduate degree in secondary education with a major in English from St. Mary of the WoodsCollege and my Master’s Degree in Educational Technology from WaldenUniversity. This will be my sixteenth year teaching at LakeshoreMiddle School, and the excitement and anticipation I feel with beginning a new school year never seems to lessen. It is even more special for me this year as I will be seeing many familiar faces that were with me as 6th and 7th grade students.
During this first week of school, my students will have the opportunity to cover some rules and expectations for my class. I wanted to send a copy of what we discussed for you to keep at home, so that through working as a team, we can ensure that your child finds success in my classroom.
1. Be Prepared – Please bring to class each day a pencil, textbook, binder, and free read book.
2. Our class textbook is quite large, so in some cases students may choose to not take it home on a regular basis. We are very fortunate to have the ability to access the entire textbook, and supporting materials, online at any time. In order to utilize the online version of the textbook, students will need to enter our school’s keycode and set up a personal account with their own login and password. Please follow the below steps when first setting up the account.
a) Go to the website activate.classzone.com
b) Enter the activation code 2743523-170
c) Follow the step-by-step instructions to set up your own personal account
d) Our book is a middle school, State of Michigan textbook
e) The title of our book is McDougall Littell Literature Grade 8
After the initial set-up of your account, you can then access the materials by simply going to the address www.classzone.com and entering your selected login and password. Once you are logged in, you have access to not only the textbook but also a wide variety of review and study activities.
3. Hand in all assignments when they are due. If assignments are frequently turned in late or missing, I will contact the parents to advise them of my concerns. In the event of an absence, the student will need to personally contact me at a convenient time upon return to school to receive make-up work.
4. My grading policy requires that all work be completed by the due date in order to receive full credit. (Of course, if a student has an excused absence, the school’s policy is followed.) For assignments that are handed in late, students will receive 70% of the assignment's final grade. Homework lunch is also available to ensure that students complete their work in a timely manner. Weekly missing assignments reports will be handed out in my class so students are aware of any work that has yet to be handed in.
5. In addition, we will have some repeating assignments that are given on a regular basis throughout the school year. Daily Language is a regular activity that will be assigned throughout the school year. Daily Language is completed in class and focuses on the basics of correct grammar, spelling, punctuation and mechanics.
6. Throughout the school year, students will also have the opportunity to place Scholastic Book and Software Club book orders. When it comes time for our first order, I will send a letter home explaining the process.
7. Finally, in order to encourage communication between parents, students, and myself, I have created a class website that contains a great deal of information relating to my Language Arts classes. The address for this site is www.mrsczechlanguagearts.weebly.com. I will make every attempt to keep this site updated with weekly assignments and other important information relating to our class.
I welcome and encourage open communication amongst the parent, student and teacher. Please don’t hesitate to call me at 428-1408, ext. 3306 should you have any questions or concerns relating to your child or my class. You can also email me at [email protected] if this is more convenient.
Again, I want to welcome you to LMS, the Starz Team, and to my class. I am looking forward to working with your child and you throughout the upcoming school year.
Sincerely,
Amy M. Czech
